WATCH: Goerges takes a tumble in Zhuhai

There were a few missteps on Wednesday in Zhuhai at the WTA Elite Trophy. Defending champion Julia Goerges took a nasty fall after being wrong-footed by Anett Kontaveit at the net.

Goerges needed to ice her hip, but would go on to win that set. The defending champion in Zhuhai would lose the match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Despite her big upset, the Estonian lost her opener to Elise Mertens in straight sets so she is still eliminated from the Rose Group. Georges needs to beat Mertens in straight sets to win the group.

There are four groups in this unique year-end championships so only the winner of each advances to the semifinals.

Over in Group Azalea, Daria Kasatkina played her second match in two days, falling to Madison Keys, 6-2, 6-4 after a two-hour, three-set win over Qiang Wang on Tuesday night.

The world No. 10, and top seed, expressed frustration at her scheduling, as many have only played one match so far.

"I mean if they want me to pull out of the tournament then they are doing a good job, because in less than 24 hours I've played two matches," Kasatkina said. "The girls [Keys and Wang] are not playing tomorrow, they are playing on Friday, and I was supposed to play two matches in less than 24 hours."

In the third match of the day, Garbine Muguruza overcame a shaky start to beat wild card Zhang Shuai, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Kasatkina may be the most frustrated but a few more players will have to deal with back-to-back matches. Kontaveit was the only other player in the 12-woman field to take the court on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Goerges won't have much time to recover as she plays on Thursday, as does Zhang (against Anastasija Sevastova).
