There’s only so much time a player can spend hitting the weights or putting in time knocking off sprints on the track during this forced downtime.

Or at least that’s what world No. 62 Lauren Davis seems to think.

The American took her workout regimen to new heights by going deep below the ocean surface. Pulling a weight attached to a line, Davis got all the resistance one could imagine by tredging through the sand in a deep knee bend. And, of course, the lung capacity is going to be tested, too.

It was a pool workout times 1000—at least.

Davis plays a rather physical brand of tennis. In 2017, she won her first title in Auckland, and a year later, she pushed former world No. 1 Simona Halep to the brink in the third round of the Australian Open.

Soon after that match, though, injuries crept in and sent her ranking spiraling outside of the top 200. A strong finish to that season, which included a run to the final at the $125,000 in Houston, helped propel her on the comeback trail. By the end of the 2019 season, the 26-year-old was ranked well inside the top 100.

Through the first few months of this year, Davis posted a 5-5 record. With tennis set to resume soon, she’ll be looking to add more wins to her season ledger.

And she’s also shown that she’s willing to put in the hard yards—with a unique touch—to move up the rankings.
