NEW YORK—Daniil Medvedev had the perfect answer for a Lous Armstrong Stadium that turned against him on Friday night. He overcame behavioral struggles, and a lot of boos, in his 7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Feliciano Lopez.

When he lost his serve for 3-5 in the first set, 23-year-old got a code violation (warning) for ripping a towel from a ball person's hands and tossing it away.

He then loftily launched his racquet in frustration over the code, and yelled at the umpire, "You're all weirdos! You should not be in the chair," echoing Stefanos Tsitsipas' words from a few days earlier.

The crowd was not impressed, so Medvedev showed them the middle finger (out of view from the chair umpire). That's all it took for New York to turn against him.

After sealing the late-night win, he trolled the crowd by cheekily thanking them for their support.

“First of all I can say thank you all, guys, because your energy tonight gave me the win,” Medvedev said on court. “Because if you were not here, guys, I would probably lose the match, because I was so tired. I was cramping yesterday; it was so tough for me to play.

"So I want all of you to know, when you sleep tonight: I won because of you.”

He kept going: “Again, the only thing I can say is the energy you’re giving me right now, guys, I think it will be enough for my five next matches. The more you will do this, the more I will win — for you guys.”

In press later on, the world No. 5 told summarized the vibes inside the second-largest stadium on site.

”The crowd was electric—even the bad energy,” he said. “I needed to turn it into good energy, and that’s why I won.”

It seems tennis has a new villain, or maybe just a new evil genius? The Medvedev people have seen off the court has been nothing but kind and friendly, so this may simply be a case of Jekyll and Hyde.

Either way, Medvedev's hot summer continues into Week 2 in New York for the first time.

He won the US Open Series Breakout Performer award after reaching the finals of Washington and Montreal and winning Cincinnati.

"It's true, it was a big breakthrough even if I started in the Top 10 already," he said last week. "I had never been in a Masters 1000 final before. I think I've never reached consecutive finals before... even in ITF Futures or Challengers.

"Reaching the Top 5, which not many people in the world reach in their careers, is a big moment and a big breakthrough."

The No. 5 seed takes on qualifier Dominik Koepfer for a spot in his first major quarterfinal.
