Morgan Riddle has made good on her bet with boyfriend Taylor Fritz to eat a whole jar of Vegemite should he advance to the Australian Open quarterfinals—well, sort of.

Let’s rewind to the fourth round, where top American Fritz was preparing to take on world No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas on John Caine Arena. The No. 12 seed was looking for his first quarterfinal appearance in Melbourne, but had lost all of his 11 previous meetings with Top 10 players at Grand Slams going into the match.

So he made a bet with Riddle—and after his 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 upset over the Greek, Fritz used his on-court interview to remind her of the promise:

"I told them I was going to win. My girlfriend said I was too confident going into the match,” he said, as a jar of Vegemite, Australia’s favorite food spread made from yeast extract with a famously strong taste, was brought out onto the court.

"Yeah, this is a big jar (but a bet's a bet)... I won't be partaking, but I'll make sure it happens."

A day after his victory, Riddle revealed she was indeed a woman of her word as she tried a spoonful of the spread on an Instagram Live with Fritz.

“Just do it, here comes the airplane,” Fritz joked, as Riddle then experienced a moment of instant regret and began coughing and gagging at the taste while more than 4,000 viewers watch on. Fritz offers her a bottle of kombucha amid laughter.

Understandably, a grossed-out Riddle declined to keep eating a full jar of the stuff—all while Aussie viewers of the livestream left numerous comments suggesting that she try the Vegemite the proper way: “Noooo put it on the bread!” one comment read, while another said that “it’s a spread for on toast or in a sandwich.”

This led to Vegemite, the spread’s namesake manufacturer, to take to Instagram to defend its honor with “A Message For Morgan”: “If you're going to do it, at least do it right. Australia, thoughts? 🤔🍞”

"Me vs Australian food brands," Riddle responded on Instagram Stories.

While the couple’s fourth-round celebration has given the Australian public a chuckle, Fritz will be all business as he prepares for his quarterfinal matchup against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Fritz has lost all eight of his previous matches with the 10-time Australian Open champion, including a five-set heartbreaker in Melbourne back in 2021, which he lost 7-6 (1), 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2.

“I think the conditions here are definitely better for me than maybe the US Open or Cincinnati,” Fritz said in a post-match press conference. “I mean, to be honest, the only decent match I've played against him in our last couple meetings was in Turin at the end of 2022. In that match I served for the second set. It was pretty close. Since then when I've played him, I've played pretty poor, I think.

“I think that I have a lot more level to bring than I've previously brought against him. Hopefully I can play another match like today."
