Being 5'7" on a tour where nine of the Top 10 players are six feet or taller often requires tenacity, creativity and, sometimes, a little bit of luck.

Yoshihito Nishioka used the third in Estoril on Monday, in his first-round match against Mackenzie McDonald.

Up a set and tied at 1-1 in the second, Nishioka tried to smash a McDonald lob directly out of the air, but, unable to reach the ball, he managed to catch only the bottom of it, with just the frame of his racquet.

The result was perfect, though, as the ball spun way up into the air and landed barely on McDonald's side of the net, giving the American no chance at all of getting to it.

"Today's Shot of the day???? LOL lol," Nishioka wrote on Twitter afterward.

Nishioka won that match, 6-2, 6-4, and, to be fair to his skillset, he also hit a few intentionally great shots, including this backhand lob ...

And this forehand pass:

Nishioka is ranked No. 71 on tour at 23 years old. In 2018, he won his first ATP title, in Shenzhen, China. In the second round of Estoril, he'll play the winner of Mikhail Kukushkin and defending finalist Frances Tiafoe.
