From Jannik Sinner’s carrot to Daniil Medvedev’s salt shaker, athletes have their preferred mid-match refueling methods, but this might be the most unique yet.

Needing an energy boost in his Sunday Montpelier final against Gael Monfils, Canada’s Vasek Pospisil took a big swig, of all things, maple syrup. He went straight out of the bottle.

It may have been the most Canadian thing to ever happen on a tennis court, but Pospisil swears by the nutritional benefits of the syrup. We’re not talking about the high-fructose injected Aunt Jemima liquid, this is 100% pure maple syrup.

Most athletes ingest energy gels, bananas or bars during competition. Oftentimes these gels contain dozens of ingredients, including preservatives. Maple syrup does not, and Pospisil swears by the stuff.

A company called UnTappedhas actually infiltrated the energy gel marketplace. As TennisTV mentioned in their tweet, perhaps Pospisil’s agent should look for a potential maple syrup deal.

It does beg the question, though, why haven’t we seen Pospisil break out the sticky stuff before now? He would lose to Monfils, 7-5, 6-3, but the run marked his first ATP final since 2014.
