Players throwing the first pitch at baseball games is nothing new, but in Cincinnati, Monica Puig added a unique twist to the tradition. The world No. 43 used a racquet to serve the ball to a Cincinnati Reds player, and pulled it off perfectly.

Then she went in for a kiss with the catcher! It turns out, her partner for the pitch is her partner in life, Cincinnati Reds player Derek Dietrich.

It's clear that Puig and Dietrich make a great pair, on the field and off it.

First pitches have special meaning for the couple as they met at a Miami game in 2016, when Dietrich played for the Marlins.

“Believe it or not we actually met when I threw out the first pitch for the Marlins, after I won the Olympics," Puig told *Outside the Ball.* “We kind of lost touch for a little bit, but he kept writing and writing and something told me just write back and here we are.”

In Cincinnati at the Western & Southern Open, Puig is the No. 3 seed in qualifying and opens against Anastasia Potopova.
