At the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, the doubles draws usually feature several teams comprised of players who do the bulk of their work on the singles court, and Monte Carlo this year is no exception.

The first big clay-court event of 2021 features duos like Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, as well as former Miami and Paris finalists Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev.

Top-20 standouts Diego Schwartzman and Fabio Fognini make up another one of the “scratch” pairings, and in the opening round, the Argentine-Italian duo faced doubles specialists Oliver Marach and Luke Saville. Fognini, a former men’s Australian Open doubles champion, obviously knows his stuff when it comes to team play—and as this point shows, Schwartzman is no slouch, either.

That point had it all, highlighted by Schwartzman’s around-the-net-post antics. Sometimes, though, it’s best to just end the point as quickly as possible.

Just ask Alexander Bublik.

The world No. 42 in singles partnered with No. 31 Dusan Lajovic to take on men’s doubles major winners Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Henri Kontinen. After Roger-Vasselin’s serve, a lob return and reply, Bublik took matters into his own hands, slamming one of the biggest down-the-middle forehands you're likely to see.

Though he nearly broke the speed gun with that shot, Bublik and Lajovic weren’t able to advance as the doubles specialists won the match in straight sets. Fognini and Schwartzman, however, did win to make the round of 16, where they’ll face the winner of the Adrian Mannarino-Benoit Paire/Wesley Koolhof-Lukasz Kubot match.
