On Tuesday, Maria Sharapova took part in the Safe Hands challenge initiated by the World Health Organization.

Some of her followers were quick to point out that she was “wasting water” by leaving the tap running as she scrubbed with soap.

The five-time Grand Slam acknowledged her mistake.

“Unlike me, please stop your tap while washing,” she said in a follow-up tweet. In the same post, she proceeded to pass on the baton by nominating some of her famous friends to take up the challenge.

Sharapova did add one extra step that we could all benefit from as our skin dries out from all the extra self-care: hand lotion.

United States Surgeon General Jerome Adams said in an interview with *CBS Evening News*that constantly washing hands is one of the most effective ways to stop the transmission of the coronavirus.
