There's no perfect time to retire, but it's hard not to take note of how Maria Sharapova's retirement on Feb. 26 came just 10 days before Indian Wells was cancelled. As everyone knows too well, from then on there's been an increasing shut down of pro tennis.

Sharapova made her sole post-retirement appearance in San Diego for the World TeamTennis Celebrity All-Star Match on March 1 (which is aired Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on CBS Sports). The Russian played her first season of WTT as a 15-year-old, and was going to compete in her ninth season overall, for the Orange County Breakers this summer.

"It was really the beginning of my career," Sharapova said. "I really am grateful for the opportunities. I've played WTT on this court, so great memories to be back here."

Team Sharapova took on Team Bryan Brothers in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. While the 32-year-old Russian didn't compete, she left a lasting impression.

"Being able to speak to Maria pretty much for the first time ever was really cool," said WTT star Taylor Townsend. "Just to be outside of the competitive environment, it was very cool."

Sharapova is more than eager to speak with her friends, fans and former colleagues, as she first organized a Zoom hangout:

And then went a step further and posted her phone number on Instagram.

"Happy Friday, whatever that means in today’s world," she said. "I've been trying to find a way to be in touch with all of you. I wanted more connection. I want you to text me what you think."

Sharapova retired after nearly two decades on tour. She won five Grand Slams, 36 total titles and won a silver medal at the London Olympic Games.
