Elina Svitolina was the favorite going into her fourth-round clash with Petra Martic, but that didn't seem to matter to the Croat. Martic—a qualifier ranked No. 290—stormed to a 5-2, 30-0 lead in the final set.

Instead of Martic reaching her first career quarterfinal, the world No. 6 flipped a switch, winning 20 of the final 24 points to complete the comeback of the tournament.

"She was playing actually extremely well towards the end..." Svitolina said. "I really found a way. I changed some things—maybe it was a little bit too late to change—but it brought me to win the match...

"When I was 2-5 down, I think I just had a mode on, 'Svitolina mode' probably back. I start playing, I start waiting for the right moment. I was really fighting to earn myself the opportunity to hit a winner."

The good news for Martic is that she will rise to No. 126 thanks to her performance in Paris (which included wins over seeded players Madison Keys and Anastasija Sevastova), but the loss will hurt for some time.

Svitolina has some pain to deal with as well. Her back started hurting suddenly just 20 minutes before the match, but she will hope to be 100 percent ready on Wednesday when she takes on Simona Halep.

The two just faced off in the Rome final just a few weeks ago with Svitolina edging past the Romanian in three sets. No matter what happens, one thing is for sure: A new Grand Slam champion is guaranteed by weekend's end.
