TORONTO – Frances Tiafoe may not be Canadian but he was certainly feeling the local love this week at the Rogers Cup.

The 20-year-old American had his Canadian girlfriend's family and his mom supporting him as he scored wins over Marco Cecchinato and Milos Raonic. He came within a few points of taking out world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday, but fell in a third-set tiebreaker.

It was still a great week for Tiafoe, and fans learned a little more about him. For one, his girlfriend Ayan Broomfield is also a tennis player. The Toronto native earned a professional ranking of No. 680 before going to Clemson (she has since transferred to UCLA). The two met thanks to fellow pro Victoria Duval.

"You know, Instagram these days and, you know, I slid in her DMS," Tiafoe said. "And then it was quite weird. I don't usually do it, and we started talking a little bit, and then I asked for her number."

Tiafoe revealed she came to watch him play the US Open in 2015, where he met some of her family members.

"I was like, jeez, we're not even dating yet, and I'm already meeting your family," he said. "We're moving quite quick here, but that was another story."

Then he admitted to asking her to date—not in person but via FaceTime. To be fair, he was just 17 at the time. It all worked out though because now he's got a partner who truly understands what he's going through with his career.

"It has it's highs and lows," he said. "She gets on me at times, but it's cool in the end. It's good that you can relate. You don't feel like she's so foreign to what you're doing. She fits right in."

Tiafoe's mom also made her presence known this week in the cutest way. When he was busy pulling off magician-like shots against Raonic, she celebrated by blowing kisses at him.

Tiafoe will rise to a career high No. 38 when the new rankings come out on Monday.
