WATCH: Top WTA stars take part in spelling bee

We know that they’re brilliant with racquets, but how are they with orthography?

Five of the world’s top female tennis players participated in a spelling bee recently for the WTA, and let’s just say that some fared better than others. We’ll cut them a break, though; some European names are awfully tricky.

Belinda Bencic, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza were put to the test.

They struggled with Muguruza—only Bencic nailed it (Garbine did too, but that doesn’t count)—and then all but Muguruza whiffed on the spelling of Wozniacki.

It only got tougher from there. Only Bencic successfully spelled Mladenovic, and all five were stumped by Pavlyuchenkova and Bacsinszky. (Come on, can you blame them?!)

Muguruza didn’t even bother trying to spell Bacsinszky.

“Sorry Bacsinszky, but it’s impossible, your name,” the world No. 4 said.

Kerber, it seemed, had the most trouble of all the WTA superstars, but we’re assuming that the Australian Open title she won in January is outweighing any disappointment she may be experiencing as a result of this performance.

The winner? In a tightly-contested bee, we’ll have to declare Muguruza and Bencic co-champions.
