In 2017, Alexander Zverev had quite a breakthrough season, winning two ATP Masters 1000 titles (Montreal and Rome). This year, the German surpassed his 2017 achievements—though he waited until the very end of the season to pull it off.

The German was pleased with defending his title in Munich. He defeated Guido Pella in the final.

"Winning on your home soil is always very special, winning it twice in a row is an amazing feeling," Zverev said.

He then moved on to winning his third career ATP Masters title, this time in Madrid. Zverev's self-proclaimed "favorite Masters tournament", the German proved that he was a contender for clay glory alongside the likes of Dominic Thiem and Rafael Nadal. The 21-year-old still stumbled somewhat at the Slams, but made his first major quarterfinal, in Paris.

Zverev then won his ninth career title during the summer hard-court swing, in Washington. He ended the season with the biggest title of his career, the ATP Finals in London. Defeating Roger Federer in the semifinals and then Novak Djokovic in the final—both in straight sets—lifted Zverev's status among the elite players at the top of the game.
