Did someone say tennis drama? Danielle Collins’ latest Instagram update seems to have officially reignted her feud with former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, as the pair’s bitter rivalry joined the laundry list of cold shoulders and tense handshakes that have kicked off the new year in tennis.

The American definitely sent a message via her Instagram Stories on Monday, as she shared a screenshot of a pre-match moment at the net between the United States and Poland at the United Cup in Sydney. Collins joined Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff in shaking hands with Swiatek, Hubert Hurkacz and more before their countries clashed in the final.

Collins was seen rolling her eyes as she shook hands with Swiatek, and the clip quickly went viral among tennis fans on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. After Gauff and Fritz led the Americans to a 2-0 victory over Swiatek and Hurkacz, Collins shared a screenshot of that handshake moment to her social media.

“Didn’t know if you guys noticed this but…. New year, same me,” she wrote, as she embedded the song ‘Be Real’ by Kid Ink and DeJ Loaf in her post. Collins doubled down by sharing another zoomed in photo of her eye roll, before making that image her new profile photo on Instagram.

The move raised more than a few eyebrows online, as it seemed to be a clear reference to one of the latest chapters of Collins’ one-sided feud with Swiatek—whom Collins branded as “insincere” after their most recent meeting at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“I told Iga she didn’t have to be insincere about my injury,” said the American, who retired from their quarterfinal match due to an abdominal injury.

“There’s a lot that happens on camera, and there are a lot of people with a ton of charisma (who) come out and are one way on camera and another way in the locker room. And I just haven’t had the best experience, and I don’t really feel like anybody needs to be insincere. They can be the way that they are.

“I can accept that, I don’t need the fakeness.”

Swiatek later told Polish press that she was confused by Collins’ reaction. “I've never done anything unkind in her direction,” she said. “I don't know what she meant. I wanted to congratulate her on a successful career, because it’s her last year on tour. We’ve never even had any interaction that would have caused that.”

"I don’t really feel like anybody needs to be insincere," Collins said of Swiatek at the 2024 Olympic Games. "They can be the way that they are. I can accept that, I don’t need the fakeness.”

The pair’s on-court history goes back to 2021, when a 19-year-old Swiatek defeated Collins in the Adelaide semifinals as the American was forced to retire due to severe lower back pain and pelvic cramping. Those symptoms later turned out to be endometriosis, a painful condition that affects the uterine lining and that required emergency surgery, sidelining Collins for much of the 2021 season.

Collins, who also lives with rheumatoid arthritis, made an emphatic comeback and a year later, she stunned No. 7 seed Swiatek in the semifinals of the 2022 Australian Open.

"I was prepared for her playing aggressive game, but I think that was the fastest ball I have ever played against on a match," Swiatek said after her lopsided 6-4 6-1 defeat. "I just feel respect for her game today … She played a perfect match and it happens.

"I also can play a perfect match. It wasn't for sure today.”

Swiatek would go on to defeat Collins in their next six matches, bringing their head to head to 7-1—and she earned a bit of revenge at last year’s Australian Open, where the world No. 1 won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in their second-round clash. That marked their first of three meetings in 2024, culminating in their tense clash in Paris, which also saw Collins repeatedly complain to the umpire about Swiatek's behavior before later striking her opponent in the abdomen with a brutal swing volley.

It’s unclear when the bad blood between Collins and Swiatek became personal. In Adelaide when they prepared to face off for the first time in 2021, Collins described the Pole as “a great competitor” and “somebody that I really enjoyed watching.”

Four years later, Collins now seems to be making clear to all her disdain for the world No. 2—if her new Instagram profile photo is indeed anything to go by.
