Just between tattoo of us: what do we think of Marketa Vondrousova’s ink?

The former Roland Garros finalist already plays one of the cooler games the 2023 Wimbledon Championships has on offer, blending effortless variety with lefty spin to enjoy her best Grand Slam result since 2019.

And Vondrousova, an Olympic silver medalist, matches that edgy style with an intriguing on-court look—accented by two bourgeoning tattoo sleeves.

“I actually go the first one when I was about 16,” she told the BBC earlier this week. “I got it for my birthday. Then, I don’t know, I just started feeling like I wanted more. Now, it’s also art for me, and I appreciate people who do that.

“I have three or four [tattoo artists] that I’m visiting often. A few are in Prague and most of them are girls!”

Her most notable bit of body art is a quote that could easily apply to Wimbledon: “no rain, no flowers.” Indeed, emerging from a stormy start to the tournament, the former world No. 14, who has endured numerous injuries since finishing runner-up to Ashleigh Barty in Paris four years ago, has made the most one of the draw’s toughest sections. From scoring upsets over No. 12 seed Veronika Kudermetova, No. 20 seed Donna Vekic, and No. 32 seed Marie Bouzkova, she saved her biggest surprise for last when she knocked out world No. 4 Jessica Pegula, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 from 4-1 down in the third on Tuesday.

“She had break points for 5-1. You are not, like, in a good mood. I don't know, I just turn it around. I just kept believing in myself,” she explained in her post-match press conference.

“Yeah, after the match point, I couldn't believe it. We were playing amazing match. She is a great player. Yeah, I mean, I think everything just went on and, yeah, I just couldn't hold the tears.”

Might her own rain yield a flower in the form of a tattoo commemorating her Wimbledon run?

“We'll see,” she said with a chuckle. “I always loved it here, but I didn't do so good. My best result was second round. Now I just get better.

“I mean, these two weeks are incredible. I just came here and I just said to myself, ‘Just stay open-minded, just try to play your game and everything.’ Now this is happening, so it's a crazy thing. Also, today was a crazy match. I'm just a bit in shock.”

Does Vondrousova have one more shock in store when she faces Elina Svitolina for the chance to reach her second Grand Slam final?
