Wimbledon 2018's
most unusual
highlights

It was a Wimbledon of flying ants and flailing seeds, of restoration and yet no rest for the weary. (26-24 in the fifth? Literally, get out of town.) Here, with all the further ado that they can muster, are the most awkward moments fresh off the trampled yet prestigious lawns of the All England Club.

1

Caroline Wozniacki succumbed to her new rival at majors, Ekaterina Makarova, who has beaten her early at two of the past four. But she didn't go down before verbally assailing the local insect community: "They're in my mouth and in my hair and everywhere – we need to do something. Is there a spray? I want to be here to focus on tennis, not eating bugs."

Another top seed that fell early, Alexander Zverev, let fly a couple orally delivered, unforced errors:

3

Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli made some "armchair quarterback" comments on the careers of Nick Kyrgios and her compatriot Gael Monfils. It goes without saying that Kyrgios wasn't having it, so he said it.

4

Kyrgios again: That time chair umpire James Keothavong, who would go on to serve in the chair for the men's singles final, had to show him proper foot-fault protocol.

5

Novak Djokovic shared his displeasure on Centre Court and again in the media room over hecklers who harped on him during a fairly competitive match against homegrown favorite Kyle Edmund.

6

Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber both found themselves at or inside the service line in their ladies' championship match. Though a Serena-struck screamer seemed to barely miss the eventual winner, a replay showed it was a miss by a few feet, if struck quite intently.

World No. 1 Mike Bryan was called for a foot fault, another foot fault – one of them on set point to force a fifth – and also for a racquet-over-net move on a volley. He still won the men's doubles title with Jack Sock, his fourth in London.

And it was a perfectly awkward closing to the tournament overall: Djokovic and Kerber danced with stilted, amusing delight (and relief?) at the champions dinner.

To the North American hard-court swing we go, where surely plenty of concrete follies await.
