For players who haven’t yet developed their net skills but have dominating groundstrokes, the one-up and one-back formation may work best. The baseline player keeps the ball in play—crosscourt and deep—while the net player is actively moving, faking and poaching. The goal is to get inside the opposing baseline player’s head.

When the time comes to poach, the best place for the volleyer to hit the ball is right at the opposing net player’s feet. He or she won’t have time to get out of the way and will likely hit a weak reply, if they can get a racquet on the ball at all.
