The Jawbone UP Move ($49) serves as an entry point in the world of fitness trackers. It’s a smart choice for people who want to see what the fuss is about, but aren’t sure their interest is strong enough yet to warrant investing heavily in the concept. It’s small, unobtrusive, and delivers good value for the price; mostly because it’s a gateway to the excellent Jawbone app, which we’ll get into greater detail below.
The puck-shaped tracker is about the size of a stack of five quarters. Instead of repeated charging, it has a battery that lasts up to six months. It comes with a rubber clip designed to be attached to a pant pocket, belt, shirtsleeve, or just about anything on your person. It can be completely covered and a great alternative to those who don’t want anything extra on their wrists. The downside is, if it’s out of sight, it can be out of mind. It’s not difficult to forget it’s on your clothes, which means it might end up in the hamper at the end of the day. And there was an instance when I forget it was on my pants pocket and I inadvertently knocked it off when I was digging for my car key. When I played a match, however, I positioned it on the waistline of my shorts and it never budged.
But that doesn’t mean the tracker can’t be worn on the wrist if desired. Soft, silicone watch bands ($15)—in a rainbow of colors—that can house the tracker are sold separately. If sleep tracking is an important feature, Jawbone recommends the wristband over the clip for better accuracy. Some coordination is needed to fasten the band, but it feels comfortable and secure once in place. From a looks standpoint,it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing when compared to some of its competition.
