Young, Harrison on the verge of Grand Slam glory

Both Americans have reached the doubles semis with their partners

Reaching the second week of a Grand Slam is a tremendous accomplishment—no matter what path you take to get there.

Donald Young and Ryan Harrison have reached the doubles semifinals at Roland Garros—albeit with different partners. After first-round losses in singles, Young and Harrison have made a deep run in the doubles draw with their respective partners, Santiago Gonzalez and Michael Venus.

With Bob and Mike Bryan's upset in the second round, America's hopes are left riding on Harrison and Young's shoulders. Rajeev Ram is still carrying the flag in mixed doubles (with Casey Dellacqua), while Bethanie Mattek-Sands (with Lucie Safarova) is the only American female left in Grand Slam contention.

Young and Gonzalez's most impressive win has been their come-from-behind quarterfinal victory against two-time Grand Slam champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. The American-Mexican duo fought off a match point to prevail in a third-set tiebreak.

On the top half of the draw, Harrison and Venus—who won Estoril together—defeated the fourth-seeded pairing of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo in the second round. On a rain-delay filled Tuesday, they advanced to the semifinals by knocking out seventh seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcel Granollers.

Both Harrison and Young have had an exceptional 2017. Aside from winning the doubles in Estoril, Harrison won his first career singles title in Memphis.

Young and Harrison have both made deep doubles runs at a Slam before. At the US Open in 2014, Young and Taylor Townsend reached the semifinals, while Harrison and his younger brother Christian advanced to the quarterfinals in 2012. Harrison also reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 French Open with Matthew Ebden.

Years ago, both Americans were pegged as future Grand Slam contenders, and now they're finally on the cusp of achieving it.
