Earlier this year, Daniil Medvedev went to the Sydney International and played his way through the qualifying rounds of the tournament. What happened next was a surprise to everyone. Medvedev went on to win the tournament, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber, Jared Donaldson, Paolo Lorenzi, Fabio Fognini and, finally, Alex de Minaur. It was the first ATP title of the 22-year-old's young career, and one can only imagine that it won't be his last.
What makes Medvedev such an interesting talent is his ability to make shots from all over the court. He is always finding angles you don't expect, which makes it impossible to count him out of a point. Medvedev is also an extremely aggressive player—and he really doesn't like it when his opponent is dictating play. He likes to come out and take it to whoever he is playing, which is a quality that a lot of the game's top players possess.
After a breakthrough 2017 season—which included a first-round win over Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon, along with other deep runs on multiple surfaces—Medvedev is continuing his rapid ascent.
