The United States lost for the fourth time in 161 ties after leading 2-0, falling to Croatia, 3-2 in Portland, Ore. On Sunday, Marin Cilic took out John Isner, 7-6 (9), 6-3, 6-4, and then Borna Coric beat Jack Sock, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Croatia will host France, a 3-1 winner over the Czech Republic, in the semifinals on Sept. 16-18. In the other semifinal, Great Britain will host Argentina.

Ivo Karlovic saved three match points to beat Gilles Muller, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (12) in the Newport final. The 37-year-old lost in the final in Rhode Island the last two years. He’s now the oldest ATP player to win a title since Marty Risen in 1979.

In just 46 minutes, Simona Halep won her second Bucharest title over Anastasija Sevastova, 6-0, 6-0. The world No. 5 won Bucharest in 2014 in the tournament’s inaugural year, but skipped it last season. Sevatsova’s last WTA final was in 2010 when she won the Estoril Open.
