Playing in front of his hometown crowd, 17-year-old Denis Shapovalov stunned Nick Kyrgios, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

He next faces a formidable task in Grigor Dimitrov, who was two points away from losing his opener against Yuchi Sugita.  Another Canadian, Peter Polansky, also scored a win on Monday, beating Tim Smyczek, while Frank Dancevic fell to Sam Querrey, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Spaniard-turned-Canadian Steven Diez toppled Kyle Edmund, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On the women’s side, playing in Montreal, rain hindered a lot of first-round play on Monday. Sam Stosur earned a win over Heather Watson, 7-5, 6-3, while Elina Svitolina took out Jennifer Brady, 6-2, 6-4. One of the more dramatic matches saw Barbora Strycova survive a few rain delays to beat Caroline Garcia, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Dominika Cibulkova is back inside the Top 10 after reaching the semifinals of Stanford. The Slovakian is 23-5 over her previous seven tournaments, including two titles and a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon. Her move up matches the career high for the former Australian Open finalist. She’s set to open against qualifier Mariana Duque-Marino in Montreal.
