The world No. 1 still won, 7-5, 7-6 (3) on Wednesday in Toronto. ''I actually think that Toronto is a great way for me to prepare for the Olympic Games and what's coming up after that,'' Djokovic said. He has won the Rogers Cup three times.

Just shy of his 30th birthday, Gael Monfils is playing his best tennis. The Frenchman is up to No. 14, his highest ranking since May 2012. He just won his sixth title in D.C., reached the quarters of the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami, and made the final of Monte Carlo. Monfils held his nerve Wednesday to beat Vasek Pospisil, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Fresh from reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, Venus Williams swept past Barbora Strycova, 6-3, 6-0, in under an hour in Montreal on Wednesday. The 36-year-old is getting set to play Rio, her fifth Olympic games. The Rogers Cup sixth seed will take on Madison Keys next. In other results, Johanna Konta toppled Vania King and Eugenie Bouchard dispatched 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 6-0.
