Petra Kvitova barely escaped a challenge from Danka Kovinic, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, while defending finalist Lucie Safarova had little trouble with Vitalia Diatchenko, breezing by with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. The rain wasn't all bad though, as the U.S. Open roof got a chance to show off some personality:

On Monday, Christina McHale was stunned by world No. 203 wildcard Myrtille Georges, 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-3 while Sloane Stephens advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Margarita Gasparyan.

Australian Nick Kyrgios was one of the few men to complete a match on Sunday before the rain started falling, winning a stiff three-setter against Marco Cecchinato, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-4. No stranger to controversy, the 21-year-old argued with the umpire after receiving a code violation for unsportsmanlike contact when he asked for a towel. Kyrgios said the official was “unbelievably biased,” and stuck to his story after the match.
