Simona Halep has officially withdrawn from Roland Garros, citing the left calf injury incurred at the Internazionli BNL d'Italia earlier this month.

"Unfortunately the tear in my left calf muscle needs more time to recover and the timeline is just too short," the 2018 champion wrote on social media.

"Withdrawing from a Grand Slam goes against all my instincts and aspirations as an athlete, but it is the right and only decision to make. The thought of not being in Paris fills me with sadness, but I will focus my energy on recovery, staying positive and getting back on court as soon as it is safe to do so. Roland Garros 2022, I’m coming for you! A bientôt."

Halep began the clay-court swing feeling confident after recovering from a shoulder injury that prematurely ended her Miami Open campaign, and was in control of a clash with fellow former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber when she appeared to suddenly injured her left leg.

A subsequent MRI and ultrasound revealed a muscle tear with less than three weeks before the second major tournament of 2021. Still, Halep had appeared optimistic on social media as recently as May 17, posting photos of herself in the midst of recovery.

Halep will miss Roland Garros for the first time in 12 years.

A 2008 junior champion in Paris, Halep captured her maiden major title on the terre battue in 2018 after two runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2017. Her last two appearances have ended at the hands of inspired teenagers Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek—the latter of whom went on to win the title last fall.

Halep will be absent from the Roland Garros main draw for the first time since 2009, when she fell in qualifying as an 18-year-old.
