Jelena Ostapenko was 'pretty confident' she'd beat Iga Swiatek in Doha semifinals

Doha Qatar TotalEnergies Open Final Preview

Itā€™s a full-circle moment for Anisimova and Ostapenko as they meet for the second time, with their first meeting coming three years ago at this very tournament. Their previous 2022 match was in the round of 32, where Ostapenko edged out the American in a gripping three-set match.

With the momentum of beating three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek en route to the final, Ostapenko is the talk of the tournament heading into the final ā€“ especially considering that she was ā€˜pretty confidentā€™ she would advance over the Pole.

"We've played a lot of matches and I know how to play against her," Ostapenko said in her post-match interview. "I was focusing on myself and knew what I had to do."

But letā€™s not forget that Anisimovaā€™s run to the final had her knocking out some well-known champions on tour: five Top 30 wins in the week, in fact.

Anisimova's wins have included two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in the opening round, 2024 WTA Comeback Player of the Year Paula Badosa in the second round, and 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in the last 16. Marta Kostyuk and Ekaterina Alexandrova, her quarterfinal and semifinal opponents, shook up the draw with a few upsets of their own, and Anisimova handled both.

Not only are the two finalists hungry to claim their first WTA Doha title, as well as their first WTA 1000-level title, they each have the game to do it.
