BANGKOK(AP) American John Isner edged Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) Monday in the first round of the Thailand Open.
The 48th-ranked Isner trailed 5-4 in the third set as the young Thai served for the match, but managed to overcome his wild-card opponent.
I knew my opponent is a good player,'' said Isner, who had 21 aces.
I got him in the first set, but after that he outplayed me the whole match. And I got a little lucky. I thought to myself maybe he hadn't been in that situation a lot.''
Isner, who ousted Andy Roddick in the third round of the U.S. Open, will play either Mischa Zverev of Germany or Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.
In Monday's only other singles match, Brazilian left-hander Thomaz Bellucci defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (7).
