Andre Agassi will assume the role of Team World Captain for Laver Cup starting in 2025, the event announced on Wednesday, succeeding longtime Captain John McEnroe.

“Andre is an icon of our sport,” said Laver Cup’s Chairman and TEAM8 CEO Tony Godsick. “His outstanding achievements on the court, character and popularity with fans around the world make him the perfect choice to take over from John next year.”

Following the conclusion of the 2024 Laver Cup event, the eight-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 will take over captain duties from McEnroe, who has been at the helm for Team World since Laver Cup’s inception in 2017.

“I am truly honored to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain,” Agassi said in the official Laver Cup press release.

“In just seven short years since the Laver Cup began, it’s been so enjoyable for fans, including myself, to watch the greats of the game team up and compete against one another in this incredible team environment.”

McEnroe will serve as captain for one more year, facing off against Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe at Uber Arena in Berlin for Laver Cup 2024, which will take place from September 20-22. Agassi will also be on hand for this year’s event, both to prepare for the role and be formally introduced as the next Team World Captain.

“I want to congratulate Andre on becoming the next Team World Captain, I know he is the right man for the job,” said McEnroe.

“The Laver Cup is very special to me, a truly incredible competition that I love being a part of. I will be rooting for him and Team World and will support him however I can.”

Borg is also set to end his tenure as a Laver Cup captain following the 2024 edition of the event, which has become a staple of the tennis calendar. After Team Europe won the first four Laver Cup events, Team World has won their first in 2022 and defended the title in 2023 with an emphatic 13-2 victory.
