Andy Murray will reach No. 1 in the world for the first time if he reaches the final in Paris. The Scot’s path to the top ranking opened following Novak Djokovic's loss to Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals.
Murray insists that he has not followed the Serb's performances too intently this week.
"I saw the first three games of Novak’s match today, and then went to chat with my coach, Jamie Delagdo], about tactics,” [he said following his third-round win over Lucas Pouille. "You don’t want to waste too much energy stressing over his matches."
While Djokovic has had to deal with coaching scrutiny and injury concerns this week, Murray has been focusing his attention on his own goal of having a good finish to the season.
"The best way to do it is to concentrate on myself," he said.
Murray defeated Tomas Berdych, 7-6 (9), 7-5, in the quarterfinals on Friday. He’ll play either Milos Raonic or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals, and if he wins that match he’ll be the new No. 1.
