Andy Murray "pumped" for potential US Open, wants to play

Several top players might have doubts about competing in a reconfigured US Open, but Andy Murray is apparently keen to play.

Fellow ATP player Feliciano Lopez, who won the 2019 Queen's doubles title with Murray, told a small group of British journalists in an online conference call that the former No. 1 is eager for the tournament to happen.

"Actually two days ago I was talking to him, and he was really pumped," Lopez said, according to *Metro*.

Murray has not played since experiencing a pelvic injury before the Davis Cup Finals. He had just captured the title in Antwerp, a few months into his stop-and-start comeback from hip surgery following the 2019 Australian Open.

But the 2012 US Open champion is now back on court, though still testing whether he can return to competition.

"He was starting to practice again," Lopez said. "I asked about the hip... he was positive. He might be able to compete again."

Murray's participation could also be important for the US Open, which could have a field lacking some other top names. Players like Novak Djokovic, Simona Halep, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and others have questioned whether they want to play under the strict protocols the tournament has established for the coronavirus pandemic.

"It would be great for everybody, especially for him," said Lopez.

Murray is a three-time Grand Slam champion.
