Arthur Fils has made history, becoming the first man born in 2004 or later to break into the Top 20 of the ATP rankings.

The Frenchman rises from No. 28 to No. 20 today after winning the biggest title of his career at the ATP 500-level clay-court event in Hamburg, and fittingly, he took out three straight Top 20 players en route to the trophy—No. 17-ranked Holger Rune in the quarterfinals, No. 19-ranked Sebastian Baez in the semifinals and ultimately No. 4-ranked Alexander Zverev in the final.

His 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (1) victory over Zverev was also the equal-biggest win of his career by ranking, after beating a No. 4-ranked Casper Ruud in the quarters of Hamburg a year ago.

MEN BORN IN 2000 OR LATER TO REACH TOP 20:
Felix Auger-Aliassime [born 2000, Top 20 in 2019]
Jannik Sinner [born 2001, Top 20 in 2021]
Carlos Alcaraz [born 2003, Top 20 in 2022]
Holger Rune [born 2003, Top 20 in 2022]
Lorenzo Musetti [born 2002, Top 20 in 2023]
Ben Shelton [born 2002, Top 20 in 2023]
Sebastian Baez [born 2000, Top 20 in 2024]
Sebastian Korda [born 2000, Top 20 in 2024]
Arthur Fils [born 2004, Top 20 in 2024]

More than a third of the current ATP Top 20—eight of the names from the above list—were born in the 2000s, namely No. 1 Sinner, No. 3 Alcaraz, No. 14 Shelton, No. 16 Rune, No. 17 Musetti, No. 18 Baez, No. 19 Auger-Aliassime and now No. 20 Fils.

Korda is just outside the elite this week at No. 23.

Fils just reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon, too.

The other three ATP title winners this week all make notable moves, too: American Marcos Giron rises from No. 46 to No. 38, his Top 40 debut, after winning the first ATP title of his career in Newport; Portugal’s Nuno Borges goes from No. 51 to No. 42, a new career-high, after winning the first ATP title of his career in Bastad; and former No. 6 Matteo Berrettini soars from No. 82 to No. 50 after winning his ninth career ATP title in Gstaad.

Over on the WTA rankings, Diana Shnaider continues her charge towards the Top 20, rising from No. 28 to a brand new career-high of No. 23 this week after capturing her third WTA title of the year in Budapest. She’s now won titles on all three surfaces this year—hard courts (Hua Hin, Thailand), grass (Bad Homburg, Germany) and now clay courts (Budapest, Hungary).

There’s no shift for China’s Zheng Qinwen, who successfully defended her title in Palermo last week and stays at No. 7.
