WIMBLEDON, England (AP)—Ashleigh Barty of Australia beat Irina Khromacheva of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (3) to win the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon on Sunday.
The 15-year-old Barty’s win made it an Australian sweep of the junior singles titles after Luke Saville lifted the boys’ trophy Saturday.
Barty, who is the first Australian player to win the girls’ title since Debbie Freeman in 1980, said she received a text message from seven-time Grand Slam champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley to congratulate her on the win.
Barty and Goolagong both have an indigenous Australian background, and have recently become friends.
“We’re close,” Barty said. “I’m really pleased to be able to talk to her like that. I talk to Evonne quite a bit. It’s great to share that experience with her, even at the junior level.”
In the boys’ doubles final, George Morgan of Britain and Mate Pavic of Croatia beat Oliver Golding of Britain and Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
