MUNICH (AP)—Fifth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus struggled before beating German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the BMW Open.

Baghdatis won his first match on clay this year Tuesday after first-round exists in Monte Carlo and Rome. Gojowczyk was making his tour debut in a main draw.

Qualifier Pere Riba of Spain advanced by beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, and Simon Greul of Germany spoiled Nicolas Kiefer’s comeback with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Kiefer has been sidelined since the start of the year with a groin injury.
