Ashleigh Barty has made a winning return to singles competition, defeating Urszula Radwanska and Daniela Hantuchova at the $50,000 International Tennis Federation event in Eastbourne.

The 20-year-old stepped away from tennis and was playing professional cricket less than a year ago, but she returned to doubles play this season and is now playing singles.

She qualified for the event and won her first-round match, 6-0, 6-3, against Radwanska, who is returning after missing time with injuries. Barty topped Hantuchova in the second round after Hantuchova beat the returning Laura Robson in her opener.

The Australian reached three Grand Slam doubles finals while in her teens.

Barty does not currently have a singles ranking.
