Caroline Wozniacki, who has only lost three matches this year and has won two of her last three tournaments, once again defends her status as the world's top player.
"I've won quite a few tournaments the last year and I feel like I'm playing great tennis at the moment and deserve to be where I am,'' said Wozniacki, who has yet to win a Grand Slam title, in Miami. "You watch tournaments on TV when you're a little girl, you don't know what Grand Slam means or what Sony Ericsson Open means, but you know what No. 1 is.''
U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez told that Sun-Sentinel that No. 2 Kim Clijsters is more deserving of the accolade, but she does have faith in Wozniacki's potential. "Wozniacki has to win a Slam eventually,'' Fernandez said. "You can't take anything away from any player who reaches No. 1, but if you ask fans and players, Kim is the true No. 1.''
Clijsters added: "It's a number. It's not something I focus on. Let her enjoy it.''—Matthew Cronin
