In Davis Cup Group 1 zonal play, Israel, Portugal, Japan and Uzbekistan took 2-0 leads. All those nations are attempting to gain a play-off spot place for next year's Davis Cup World Group.

Israel's Amir Weintraub and Dudi Sela both scored wins over Poland, while Portugal’s Federico Gil and Rui Machado also took victories over the Slovak Republic. Japan is up 2-0 over the Philippines after Tatsuma Ito defeated veteran Cecil Mamiit 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-7(3), 9-7 in 5 hours 25 minutes, Japan’s longest Davis Cup rubber in history. Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin led his team to a 2-0 lead over New Zealand.

Ukraine and the Netherlands are tied at 1-1, as are Finland and Slovenia. China P.R. is up 2-0 over Chinese Taipei with top player Mao-Xin Gong beating Tsung-Hua Yang 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(5), 4-6, 8-6 in 4 hours and 49 minutes, and 19-year-old Di Wu upsetting No. 42 Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 7-5, 9-7 in 4 hours and 14 minutes.

Canada and Mexico are tied at 1-1 after Daniel Garza upended Frank Dancevic 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, but then Milos Raonic crushed Manuel Sanchez 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Raonic’s personal coach, Galo Blanco, was asked to leave the stadium during Dancevic’s match for arguing with the umpire. Uruguay and Columbia are also tied at 1-1

In Group II play, Britain and Tunisia are tied at 1-1.
