INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Former U.S. Open winner Juan Martin del Potro, along with 10 Americans, has been given wild cards into the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open next week.
Del Potro reached the quarterfinals at Sydney this year and is coming back from left wrist surgery in January. His best result in five appearances at Indian Wells came two years ago when he made the final.
Americans Tim Smyczek, Ryan Harrison, Denis Kudla, Austin Krajicek, Nicole Gibbs, Taylor Townsend, Grace Min, Louisa Chirico, Sachia Vickery and veteran pro Bethanie Mattek-Sands were also given wild cards Wednesday.
Also granted a wild card was 18-year-old Donna Vekic of Croatia. The last women's wild card was given last week to top-ranked Serena Williams, who is returning to the Southern California desert for the first time since 2001.
The tournament featuring the ATP and WTA tours runs March 9-22.
