They can be dicey, such "10 Questions With"-type features, but Juan Martin del Potro gave truly intriguing answers at the ATP World Tour event in Sydney, Australia. Yes, there are the typical responses—he'd pick Serena Williams as his mixed doubles partner, and his 2009 U.S. Open title remains his favorite on-court feeling—but he also reveals who he least likes to face on court. That would be Roger Federer, as the 17-time Grand Slam singles champ slices, drop shots, and so on, and Del Potro admittedly doesn't like to run much.
Surprisingly, he tags Marat Safin as one of his tennis idols, wishing that he had played against him more than in the Russian's final professional match. He goes on to mention his favorite practice partner on tour, as well as the one match he'd most like to replay. (Scratch that. There's even just one set he'd like to redo.) Furthermore .. ah, just see the full clip below.
The Forehand Artist Known as Delpo has been in the news lately for fairly odd reasons. One, he compared the Sydney tune-up tournament's hard courts to grass, and he revealed that he had two racquets remaining of the vintage axes he commonly uses in matches.
The big man can surely do some damage on hard courts; that's well documented, and what remains to be seen is how far he can go in a remarkably deep quarter of the men's singles draw in Melbourne. He himself drew a qualifier in the first round, but that part of the field includes Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt, Kei Nishikori, Grigor Dimitrov, Gael Monfils, (deep breath) Milos Raonic, and Bernard Tomic, as well as American upstarts Jack Sock, Ryan Harrison, and Donald Young, among a few more seeded pros.
How far do you think Delpo can go Down Under this month?
