DOHA, Qatar (AP) Beijing Olympics champion Elena Dementieva has announced her retirement from professional tennis after bowing out of the WTA Championships.

Dementieva made the announcement Friday in a tearful ceremony in Doha, surrounded by her fellow rivals. She was eliminated from reaching the semifinals on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Russian, who reached two Grand Slam finals during her 12-year career, has struggled with injuries all season. Her final match was a 6-4, 6-2 loss to French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in group play at the WTA Championships.
