Elena Dementieva, winner of the Paris Indoors last week, retired down 6-4, 1-1 with a right shoulder injury against Daniela Hantuchova, Kateryna Bondarenko stopped down 4-1 against Victoria Azarenka with a left knee sprain, and Anabel Medina Garrigues withdrew with a lower back injury ahead of her match against Svetlana Kuznetsova.
