France's Diane Parry made waves on Monday by winning her first Grand Slam match as a 16-year-old wild card at the French Open, but she's also getting noticed for her old-school play.

The teen hits a one-handed backhand—a shot used by former No. 1s as recently as Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin, but now used by just a handful of WTA players.

Parry's comes straight from her fellow Frenchwoman, and she says it sets her apart.

"It's Amelie Mauresmo who taught me," she said. "I'm very happy to have a one-handed backhand. I'm one of the very few players to have one,"

That's not the only one-hander Parry has learned from, as she indicated when asked about her idols.

"Roger Federer, to no one's surprise," she said. "I don't really have [women] idols, but I like Serena Williams and [Naomi] Osaka."

Ranked below the Top 400, Parry still plays juniors but approached her opener like an experienced pro.

"We're French. We play at the French Open. There are expectations. I'm trying not to think about this and to focus on my game and what I have to do," she said.

Next up is a second-round meeting against No. 20 seed Elise Mertens.
