Day 4: Fish-n-Chips
Where: Fulton Market (Food Village)
Cost: $13.50
Among the fish-house standards available at this seafood concession are two battered and fried cod fillets served up with a pile of seasoned waffle fries, cole slaw, and tartar sauce. It’s not the best rendition of this classic we’ve ever had: The cod we sampled would have benefited from a dusting of salt after being hoisted from the fryer, and we like our tartar sauce punched up with lots of lemon and a more generous complement of capers and cornichons. But the waffle fries are delish, and there’s a deceptive value here: The two fillets are huge, and the fries are ample, meaning that this is a dish that can shared. (The only shortfall is the coleslaw, but it’s scarcely more than a garnish anyway.) You likely won’t be able to secure an extra plate from the counter staff (the stated reason is that they are used for inventory purposes), but if you don’t mind sharing right from the tray, this is a meal made for two.
