Day 12: Kale Salad with Grilled Chicken
Where: Village Market (northwest corner of Food Village)
Cost: $14

As the U.S. Open builds to its conclusion, we were seeking something relatively healthful to balance the indulgences of the past two weeks. We found it at the Village Market, a grab-and-go concession on the less populated northwest corner of the Food Village (the side closer to Arthur Ashe Stadium). There, four ready-made salads are on offer, a Spinach Salad, Mediterranean Salad, a Chopped Salad, and a Kale Salad.

All are (over)priced at $14, and all topped with grilled chicken, which might be a case of "give the people what they want" but still feels a bit limited. Nonetheless, the kale salad we sampled, which focuses on the "it" green of the moment, was a suitable late-summer lunch, featuring yellow beans, green beans, tomato, carrots, cucumbers, and a honey-dijon vinaigrette. There are also a selection of sandwiches here, as well as chips, cookies, and other sundry items. A quick, no-frills dining option away from the frenzy of the big name vendors across the way… nothing more and nothing less.
