DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)—Defending champion Novak Djokovic beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Dubai Championships on Monday

The second-seeded Serb broke twice in the first set and three times in the second.

Top-ranked Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament on Sunday because of a lung infection

Djokovic, Andy Murray, Nikolay Davydenko, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Marin Cilic are the top-10 ranked players in the field.

Murray plays Igor Kunitsyn of Russia later Monday.
