Farewell to the “Neighborhood Baby”: Remembering Tom Perrotta

The International Tennis Writers Association (ITWA) is now accepting entries for the Tom Perrotta Prize, an annual award recognizing excellence in tennis journalism created in memory of the late American tennis writer.

A long-standing and well-loved member of ITWA, Perrotta’s own exemplary contributions to tennis journalism were cut short by his untimely passing in 2021 at the age of 44.

"During his tenure at Tennis Magazine and, later, in his heyday as the [Wall Street] Journal’s chief tennis correspondent, acts of journalistic bravado were Tom’s stock in trade," wrote Tennis.com's Pete Bodo in his memory. "He routinely borrowed a quality from the great athletes he so often wrote so well about: He made an extremely difficult task look easy.”

This year's Tom Perrotta Prize will be awarded to a young tennis writer, age 35 and under, and will also include a cash award of $2,000. The winner will be presented with the award during the 2023 US Open.

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the International Tennis Writers’ Association (ITWA) cosponsor the award.
