MONACO (AP) Roger Federer has lost to seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion wasted seven breakpoints against Melzer in swirling conditions.

Melzer broke once in each set. He sealed the victory when Federer chopped a weak forehand into the net. Melzer next plays No. 4 David Ferrer of Spain.
