Federer releases upcoming schedule, won’t play Miami Masters

Roger Federer will play all of the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournaments through Wimbledon except Miami, according to his newly released schedule:

Most of the top players from the ATP and WTA will play in Miami (March 25-April 5), but Federer decided to use the time for rest. He played the event last year, losing in the quarterfinals to Kei Nishikori. Federer also skipped Miami in 2013. He hasn't won the tournament since 2006, when he successfully defended his title.

“[It’s] physical preservation,” his agent, Tony Godsick, told the Miami Herald. “It’s unfortunate because Roger loves Miami and has had success there, but he turns 34 this year and he just can’t play every tournament.

“He has to play a schedule that works for him physically, that makes sense with his family, so he had to change it up.”

The world No. 2 will play Dubai and Indian Wells on hard courts, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros on clay, and then Halle and Wimbledon on grass.

Federer has yet to decide what he will do in the rest of the summer and the fall. “I am currently working on my summer and fall tournament schedule and as soon as I have it finalized, I will release it,” Federer said on Facebook. “I’m looking forward to a great 2015.”
