Roger Federer came from a break down in the third set to defeat Tomas Berdych and reach the semifinals of Toronto, avoiding three straight losses to the Czech.
Earlier in the year, Federer lost to Berdych after holding match point in Miami and again at Wimbledon last month. "At the beginning of the year, these were the kind of matches I was losing," said Federer. "This one almost slipped away from me too. I got lucky tonight.
"It seemed like Miami all over again, but I fought hard."
Federer won the first set in fairly routine fashion before double faulting twice to lose the second. Berdych served for the match at 5-3 before getting broken in a wild nine-minute game, and then produced some shaky errors to go down 4-0 in the tiebreak. But Federer returned the favor, sending the score back to 5-5 before securing the match on Berdych's serve two points later.
