AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) Organizers say former top-ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain has withdrawn from next week's Heineken Open tennis tournament because of injury.
The former French Open champion planned to use the tournament as part of his buildup to the Australian Open, but was forced to withdraw because of knee and wrist injuries. He would have been the No. 7 seed.
Tournament director Richard Palmer said Wednesday he has yet to decide who will receive the final wild card into the tournament's main draw. It had been set aside for world No. 5 Robin Soderling. Soderling was due to play his second-round match in Brisbane on Wednesday.
